A warrior doesn't complain. They laugh at the struggle... and it's always a struggle.
Developing a warrior mindset seems to be at the heart of all that's been going on in the last few years and the current year of 2025.
This is going to demand a lot from all of us. And when I say warrior, I'm not talking about aggression.
I'm talking about toughness, mental, physical, and spiritual.
Prophecies have spoken of the spiritual tribulations we're in now. One must cultivate a warrior mindset to get through it all.
To discuss that here, I've pulled inspiration from The Wheel of Time by Carlos Castaneda. Castaneda was an American professor of Mexican and Peruvian descent.
He apprenticed with a Yaqui Indian from Mexico who was a master shaman.
This shaman was known as Don Juan Matus.
I read all the books Castaneda wrote back in the 1990s. The wisdom buried in his books is almost without parallel in my opinion.
So, this discussion will be based on the experience Castaneda had with his shaman, Don Juan, and my interpretation of it.
This is a time (in 2025 and beyond) when we need to tap into our warrior energy.
However, there is a catch to doing this. You can't tap your warrior energy from a place of comfort.
It's not as easy as just picking up a metaphorical shield just because it seems cool or because you want to.
You've got to be pushed into taking the warrior's path.
Those who become warriors are because they've been tested. Below is a quote from a book by Carlos Castaneda.
His benefactor, or sponsor, so to speak, was Don Juan, a Yaqui Indian and master shaman in Mexico.
Matus came from a very long line of shamans. He spent approximately two decades as master shaman to Castaneda.
Castaneda wrote a series of books about his experience with Don Juan from the late 1960s through to the 1990s.
I've read them all, and I've learned a tremendous amount.
Below is a quote from Don Juan Matus that Castaneda included in one of his books. It reads like this;
“The spirit of a warrior is not geared to indulging and complaining, nor is it geared to winning or losing. The spirit of a warrior is geared only to struggle, and every struggle is a warrior's last battle on earth. Thus the outcome matters very little to him.
In his last battle on earth a warrior lets his spirit flow free and clear. And as he wages his battle, knowing that his intent is impeccable, a warrior laughs and laughs.”
Don Juan Matus
Now, I will say, Don Juan Matus had a way of putting things that was a bit hard to understand. It was extremely abstract, and some of the terms he used require a definition for today.
For example, when he says impeccable, basically that means being fully in the present moment.
In this quote, Don Juan was describing principles of energy and life here on Earth that was extremely abstract, so an exacting definition or explanation is not really possible.
However, I gained so much from Castaneda's books, I feel it's so important to pass these lessons on.
So, let's take a closer look at this quote, in a way that will make it immediately applicable.
When Don Juan says, The spirit of a warrior is not geared to indulging and complaining, nor is it geared to winning or losing.
I think this part is actually fairly standard when it comes to the warrior's way type of advice, which we often get today as well.
Complaining suggests a victim mindset, and caring about winning or losing makes you far too concerned with outcomes, which means the world controls you, which is not the way of a warrior.
So, both of these types of behaviors are not suited to the warrior.
Don Juan's next quote;
"The spirit of a warrior is geared only to struggle, and every struggle is a warrior's last battle on earth. Thus the outcome matters very little to him. In his last battle on earth a warrior lets his spirit flow free and clear. “
Don Juan Matus
Well, now things are getting deeper.
When he says struggle, I believe this to mean both internal and external. We either come out victorious or we die.
For example, if you want to lose 15 pounds and get in better shape, you focus on that mission until that's accomplished. If not, then you continue the struggle.
Either way, it'll be a struggle. It's not easy to lose that weight or to get in better shape, but even if you accomplish it, it's still ongoing.
And the point is to be impeccable, meaning being in the moment.
So as you take on these battles, you must do so by staying very present without being too concerned with the outcome.
Have you ever met someone who is very comfortable in their lives and sees no reason to spend effort on struggling?
Someone with good health, gainful employment, a warm home, and friends and family who treat them well.
People like this are often very nice and kind people, the type that would never cause undue harm or problems.
They are nice people. However, this is not the kind of person that you go into battle with, or face life's problems with, or take a stand with.
Most of life's problems will have these very nice people bowing out, or staying silent, or just disappearing.
And they won't have an impact.
These types of people do not make an impact on the world or other people's lives. Not much anyway.
And that's not the warrior's way.
He'll let his spirit flow free and clear, as Don Juan said.
As he wages his battle, and there's always another battle.
So, it's the absolute attention to the now, while staying alert and relaxed, that is important.
And that's what every good warrior does. And then a warrior 'laughs and laughs.'
So even as you wage your battles, find joy, enjoy the struggle. And when we do that, it becomes joyful folly.
